CAD/CAM Dentistry is a specific field of dentistry that uses CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) technologies to address various types of dental restorations, including:
Crowns
Crown Lays
Veneers
Inlays and Onlays
Fixed Bridges
Dental Implant Restorations
Orthodontic Appliances
How are CAD/CAM restorations different from conventional ones?
Timeframe:
Where conventional prosthesis (like crowns) require “temporaries” to be placed on the tooth while a lab produces the permanent restoration, CAD/CAM restorations are typically bonded right away. Finished crowns can be created with CAD/CAM technology in as little as one hour. Same day crown!
Process:
CAD/CAM restorations require less preparation of the tooth than standard restorations, as they are more effectively bonded on the enamel of a tooth than on the underlying dentin. Because of this difference, care is taken to leave the layer of enamel in place.
Color Matching:
CAD/CAM dental restorations more closely match the basic shade of the restored tooth.
How are CAD/CAM restorations done?
After we correct the broken or decayed areas of the tooth, a digital impression (scan) is taken and uploaded into a computer. Special software then creates a replacement part for the missing tooth, resulting in a virtual restoration.
The virtual data is sent via the software to a milling machine that carves the replacement part out of a solid block of ceramic of composite resin, after which the surfaces of the restoration are fired with stains and glazes to correct color inconsistencies. The restoration is adjusted in the patient’s mouth, and cemented or bonded into place.
That’s it!
